IDENTITIES IN FLUX II:
RECONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY

Collection Overview

The “IDENTITIES IN FLUX” collection repurposes found items of personal identification. In these two videos reveal the relationship between personal data and personal identity. Using everyday items and converting it into a new piece of art.

IDENTITIES IN FLUX II - Intro

“IDENTITIES IN FLUX II” utilizes items from my personal clothing collection. Personal style is often said to be a reflection of personal identity. This video presents my personal aesthetic projected through another person. By styling my friend in my clothing I am able to detach myself from pieces that are meant to reflect my own identity.

RECONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY

The way we wear our clothes is personal. The way we style our clothes tells the story of our personal background. Style is not just defined by brands and their value. Style is a translation of lifestyle, personality and attitude. Brands help curate the stories we tell of ourselves. We can be luxury, high-end, street, mass market or a mix of all these, just by our purchases.

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way we dressed ourselves. It was a quarantine of our style and identity as much as our physical selves. The clothing left untouched were the clothes we save for the versions of ourselves we identify with the most but don’t always have the occasion to wear, the aspirational outfit.

I wanted to examine how much of myself I can transfer onto another person, by styling my friend in my personal clothes. So, I created a lookbook by taking photos of my friend wearing examples of my most authentic styles. I created a short video made up of the images I shot and added a visual effect of constant flowing images stacking on top of other images.

Through the attempt at transferring a personal identity onto another, I discovered that clothing and styling can only tell so much of one story. Once clothes are on another person, it translates differently, even if styled in exactly the same way. The style becomes a fusion more than a transference.
